      Twenty case studies explore the challenge of governance in Latin America, China and Europe. They were posted online by researchers, who used the platform as a working tool. Also on the site are analyses of the background of each city. Young researchers' papers retrace the history of a controversy that has aroused conflict over an urban project. If you are a guest and not yet signed up, register to explore and comment on the research findings.

The City on the Move academic chair in Europe:

The mission of the City on the Move Institute (IVM) is to instigate multiple programmes intended to disseminate knowledge and expertise on urban mobility.In pursuit of its objective, in 2001 it created an academic Chair in 2001 in partnership with the “City and Environment” Postgraduate School near Paris.In 2010, an agreement was signed between IVM and Paris-East University.It extends a partnership agreement to pursue and develop its activities under the aegis of the new City, Transport and Territories (VTT) postgraduate School at Paris-East University and its City, Environment and their Engineering (VEI) Research Centre.

Primarily intended for academic researchers, researchers, professionals and students at Masters degree, doctoral degree and engineering degree level, the Chair’s mission is to:

-         Facilitate international academic exchanges on IVM’s themes, such as mobility as a generic right, the design and uses of public space, the links between mobility and social exclusion, between mobility and sustainable development, etc.;
-         Develop links between multidisciplinary scientific approaches and practical experiments to provide universal access to mobility;
-         Elicit and contribute ideas on mobility by sharing the results of research and experiments as widely as possible, beyond the world of transport specialists;
-         Contribute to a dialogue between science and society and to stimulate a genuine sharing of knowledge, through traditional methods of dissemination (lectures, publications, newsletters, etc.) and through specially designed collaborative systems and Web 2.0 platforms (e.g. collaborative workshops, interactive processes such as blogs, portals, online forums, etc.).

Every year, the Chair devises a programme of lectures and a seminar, the proceedings of which are published.Academic figures from all over the world are invited to contribute.

The President of the scientific committee of the chair is Jean-Pierre Orfeuil, Professor at the Paris Institute of Urban Planning (IUP), University Paris Est and Chairman of City on the Move’s Scientific and Strategy Council.

The City on the City on the Move academic chair in China:

Created in April 2005, City on the Move’s academic Chair in China is the outcome of a partnership with the College of Architecture and Urban Planning at the prestigious University of Tongji in Shanghai. Every year the Chair, under the scientific supervision of Professor Pan Haixiao, hosts three figures from the world of research for a week of lectures and discussions. The role of the Chair is to provide a focus for points of view from different disciplines – sociologists, transport engineers, economists, geographers, etc. – on the issue of urban mobility. mobility.

Increasing our understanding of urban mobility and mobility practices, enhancing our assessment of modal choices in transportation practices, are important components in the setting of public policies for mobility, for transportation and for urban development. In China, development and transportation decisions have major implications for the future, because they involve often radical transformations of the urban landscape and of lifestyles. These decisions are often based on quantitative analyses which use data that ignore too many phenomena and elements which are actually fundamental to the reality of urban mobility. Today, China’s universities play an essential role in defining the new practices and the new policies; to perform this role, they need feedback and discussion with the rest of the world.
In order to contribute to the emerging improvement in approaches to urban mobility in China, IVM and the University of Tongji in Shanghai have together created an academic chair. This Chair is an additional link in the chain of relations between IVM and the University of Tongji. It seals a partnership that began three years ago with Professor Pan Haixiao. Under his supervision, the Chair hosts European experts (teachers, researchers, etc.) for educational visits around the theme of mobility from a resolutely multidisciplinary perspective.

   The City on the Move academic chair in Latin America:

The purpose of IVM interdisciplinary chair in Latin America is to raise awareness in academic circles of the multiple dimensions of mobility, to formulate new questions, and to generate and disseminate knowledge that will contribute to the decision-making process and encourage innovation. Its role is to explore the specific features of Latin American mobility, and in particular the transition currently underway and prospects for innovation. The territories studied are not only the major cities ñ special attention will be paid to the cities of intermediate size. The activities initiated by the partner universities may include: joint doctoral supervision; translation and publishing; the running of cross-disciplinary seminars on specific subjects; discussions with IVM European and Chinese chairs on topics such as:

• The production of information on the city and transportation, the potential role of mobile phones in circulating information
• Female autonomy and day-to-day mobility in Latin America (access to jobs, complex mobility and family life, women producing their own mobility services, women in transportation, etc.)
• Public transport versus sustainable public mobility services, new services and informal innovation
• The growing role of motorcycles in Latin American cities, governance of taxi systems
• The city at home (home service provision)
• Working on the move (mobile offices, etc.)
• Governance: the tension between planning and individual autonomy

The Chair will seek to explore these themes from a multidisciplinary perspective (the socio-economics of transport, engineering, architecture, urban planning, urban design, information technology, the sociology of families, of organisations, of innovation, gender studies, political sciences, geography, etc.), including anthropology, which will be used to explore the pre-Columbian roots of Latin America, in particular the nomadic traditions of the indigenous peoples.
